I have been thrifting for years and this is quite the find!!
www.antiquedress.com/item3454.htm
Does anyone know how to go about getting this dress appraised or how to figure out what it is worth?I want to get hitched in it then sell. I found similar dresses to this on the above website for 15k. And they say this dress is in a museum!
Holy wow, huh!
get this: it was $19.99

Re: found in thrift store: vintage Bob Mackie!
Fri, October 17, 2008 - 9:32 AMHoly scorearamadama!! Nice job! The only thing I can think of at the moment is to call a local museum or university costume design or textile department to see if they would appraise it, or know of someone who would.

Re: found in thrift store: vintage Bob Mackie!
Fri, October 17, 2008 - 9:56 AMYou could search for a high-end vintage clothing store in your city and have them take a look at it, too.
There's one in Los Angeles, called The Paper Bag Princess, and I know they pay good prices.
Awesome score! In my hunting, I've only found some Betsey Johnson's and the occasional Versace. -

Fri, October 17, 2008 - 10:03 AMGood ideas! thanks!
If you ever get to Austin you must hit the thrift stores here! Best city for thrifting in my experience. I may just try and sell the dress cause I am a clumsy girl and I could see spilling red wine all over it! -

Re: found in thrift store: vintage Bob Mackie!
Tue, October 28, 2008 - 2:46 PMI am a lucky diva! But...the dress isn't worth as much as I originally thought. It all has to do with how many were made and since there are a few of these it is probably valued around 5k. Not friggin bad for my smelly little thrift store! -

Re: found in thrift store: vintage Bob Mackie!
Thu, November 13, 2008 - 11:47 AMWell, I got a little nervous about ebay because I've never sold anything much less an expensive item on it. So it is in my closet...
Any takers? ;)
I would give my Tribe sisters a great deal! -

Re: found in thrift store: vintage Bob Mackie!
Fri, November 14, 2008 - 7:28 AMEbay will not allow you sell a high-end brand name right off the bat. You have a build a sellers status with 100% feedback for some pre-determined amount of time (and I don't know what that is). That is especially true for brands like LV, Gucci & the brand they are most wary of, Chanel. I believe this is to determine if you are a dealer in copycat fashion or actually have the real deal.
That said, you could always contact an eBay rep with detailed photos & dimensions of your B.Mackie, and feel out if this is a brand that they have red-flagged. I kind of doubt it..
The other thing to consider if you are selling to a vintage store is that the fact that you may get low-balled in regards to what you think the "value" of the piece is. You have to consider the buy low, sell high factor. The typical formula that I've seen is payout of 1/3 of the retail value. Some stores will payout a higher percentage but it depends on day, sometimes. They store will want to make money. If you feel you have to get the most high amount, I would consider consignment at a reputable consignment store in an urban area that gets lots of traffic/turnover. Since you are in Austin, I would woo the stores in the Dallas or Houston areas, where ladies have lots of events to go to and need gowns.
I'd be interested in knowing what you want to get for this piece. Just for fun. And also what if you consider this to be a wearable size.
Last but not least, Roxy, You live in Texas, the epi-center for Pageant Fun, and Bob Mackie is the KING of Pageant Fashion. Perhaps there is a Pageant organization where you can post the opportunity for sale.
Anyways, it's a happy problem & when the time comes for the sale, you'll be thrilled. Think of the return on your thrift store investment!

Re: found in thrift store: vintage Bob Mackie!
Tue, November 18, 2008 - 2:42 PMThanks! This is very helpful info!! Another reason I didn't want to sell on ebay because it does have about 1% loss of beads and I would hate it if I shipped it to someone and they were unhappy. So, I was thinking of taking it to a dress maker to see if they could repair it and go from there. I did think about Dallas--that is a very good idea. I may just have to call some nice consignment stores and see what they have to say. I'll let you all know what happens. I think someone wanted to know the size? It says a size 12 but I would say it is more like a size 10 in current times.
