Clasic, holywood red lipstick

topic posted Thu, July 14, 2005 - 10:56 AM by  gale
This is not a clothing question but it is related to vintage style. It is a question that has been on my mind for over a decade and I thought you might be able to help me... You know that red red color lipstic taht can be seen in movies and in comercials and then when I go out and try to find anything that color it just can't be found? The ones I find are all too orange, or too purple or too brown to be that color that I call in my mind celeb movie star red. Very vintage movie star. I would save up and pay $100/stick for that color if I could ever find it. Soo, do any of you know of any companies who sell this color? Any tips would be great! I have very pinkish skintone, just in case that is relevent, don't tan at all, and have light hair and eyes... But I love red lipstic! Thank you.

I purchased some from CVs by wet and wild cheap and vampy. It is just called true red I think I used it last year for halloween, also I think MAC has some true reds, most of the lipsticks are under $20 bucks too. I'd try one of those.

If you ever cross the border to Canada,
we have this wonderful brand called "Marcelle", you can get it at the drugstore.
They have a color called "Vintage Red" which I love. The real thing!

It costs about 9$ Canadien... darn cheap and the quality is very good, I just have to use a more brownish and dryer pen and it stays beautiful with small inner lip touch-ups.

You can probably find it online too.
Tell me if you can get your hands on one!

    Good luck!

I'm partial to Mac's Ruby Woo as many of my girlfriends are.
<---- I'm wearing it in my main photo :)
It's matte and lasts for ever once you get used to how it feels.

I love Paloma Picasso's "Mon Rouge" lipstick. This, and OPI's "Hey Vito, is My Car Red-y" are the only reds I feel comfortable about wearing. But "Mon Rouge" is outstanding.

Actually, I'm a Paloma fanatic, and also wear the cologne, which makes me feel absolutely yummy.

A vintage-obsessed friend of mine in Japan wears what looks to me like the red you describe. I e-mailed to ask her what it was, and she said it's "Bright Carmine" by Shiseido . Corinne Drewery (from Swing Out Sister) told her about it years ago, and she swears by it for that classic movie star red.

I know--it may seem strange to trust the opinion of a British pop singer-via-a girl in Japan about a Japanese lipstick trying to look "Hollywood", but it might be worth checking out.

I must second your friends choice. I found Shiseido years ago and love their matte red lipstick and fantastic loose powder. It's pricey, but well worth it. The lipstick stays on and looks true. It is the only brand I wear. The others are either too glossy or not "bloody" enough, color-wise...too much pink, not enough blue in the red.

I agree with Miriam on matte Mac lipstick.. the perfect red I found (that works for me) was called Viva Glam. It took forever to find a good red, and yes it does last FOREVER.. I'm talking dinner, dancing, and a little afterwards.. my boyfriend referred to it as my "neigh-indestructable lipsick."

yay Viva Glam! i love this color... it's a lasting and really vibrant red. MAC makes a few really good reds, Russian Red is very classic looking too, as is Marrakesh, depending on your skin tone.

True story: after being maid of honor at a wedding, and drinking with all the groomsmen at the reception, i somehow managed to get back to my house, up the stairs, strip off dress and undergarments and pass out face down on the bed, sometime around 3am. When i woke around 3pm the next afternoon, i still had lipstick on and there was a viva glam colored lip print on my pillow! That's how indestructible it is!! ;-)

I second the MAC!!! The colors are really true and they have a matte finish line which is what you really want if you're going for a vintage look. All the frosty stuff didn't come in until late 50's.

I have L'Oreal's "Sangria" #730, but I think it's kind of old. If you want a perfect red nail polish, get Revlon's "Raven Red." Maybe Revlon makes a lipstick to match it too.

Your coloring looks pretty similar to mine, which is "winter."
Though your "season" would depend on your hair color, I think.

I'm really fond of a pencil that Aveda makes. I can't recall the color name (I think it's "Fig") but it's a rich dark red. I put that on, then some too-bright red I have, and end up with a very vintage look. Makes it last a long time, too.

If you find something perfect for you, please post what it is. I'd like to find something to replace that garish red.

Aveda used to make this GREAT red called Matte Pomegranate....I thought I lost it a couple years back ( I eventually did find it in some random purse!) so I went hunting at EVERY Aveda store I came across both here and in England. I finally e-mailed them cause I couldn't find it, and as usual it's been DISCONTINUED. but here's what they suggested to achieve a similar look:

"If you are looking for a
      similar
color to the Matte Pomegranate, we recommend using the Aveda Tarragona
      Lip
Liner Minus Petro Waxes combined with the Aveda lip satin PLUS FRESH
      ESSENCE
in Shizandra or Redwood. When attempting to achieve the matte colors,
      it is
important to use the Aveda Tarragona Lip Liner Minus Petro Waxes. "

seems a little involved to me, but anyway I really like their liners and lipsticks and some of the reds I've seen recently look a bit vintage-y. goodluck!

This is in regards to Julie Hewett lip color... I was told to try this line by someone in the Makeup Artists tribe. www.juliehewett.net/lips.html
I didn't see any locations around the SF bay area so I wrote the company and asked them and they said:

"we are actually in a brand new store in berkeley called 'herringbone' 1527 shattuck ave. berkeley, ca 94709
tel #510.649.9442. you can see the entire line and try the reds!"

I called the store and was told it doesn't open until the beginning of next month, so it is a brand new store. I am very hopeful :)

The most accurate classic red lipstick I've encountered is Chanel's Red No. 5. It's exactly the same color Chanel has been selling since back in the day when lipstick only came in red.

the only red I wear is il bacio by borghese, but the tube I have says 1993, and i'm pretty sure it's discontinued...I just stocked up a long time ago. but you might go up there and ask if they have a similar color, plus, their lipstick is the best quality, one application lasts and lasts and isn't dry like those so called all day lipsticks, it's rich and creamy.

Update... I went over to Berkeley to Herringbone and tried on the Julie Hewett, Noir line of lipsticks... Femme Noir seems to fit with my coloring well. I bought a tube of it and like it so far. I will give an extended report after I wear it a few more times. It is rose scented... and seems to be wearing well, without being overly drying. I have been drinking water all morning and while it is coming off on the glass, plenty of color is on my lips too! I haven't taken a picture yet but I will soon :)

I'll keep you posted on the rest you suggested too :) Thank you all so much!

I went out today and treated myself to a tube (well, two...I'm only admitting to one if the spouse asks) of Chanel lipstick. I replaced my old worn-out Vamp...I think I'll wear it to bed!

And allow me to plug Eco Bella vanilla lip balm--a perfectly metrosexual substitute for UltraStik Mecha-Carmex or whatever the kids are using today (darned kids, with their music and their clothes).

I've tried literally dozens of lip balms, and Eco Bella's the only one that actually prevents chapping for me, plus it smells great (in a gender-neutral sort of way). About $4 a tube, at places like Rainbow Grocery and Whole Phood. Yes, I'm strong enough to be weak enough to talk about lip balm.

Are you posting this because Eco Bella is tinted like the new line of Burt's Bees?

What colours do they come in?
            • Re: Clasic, holywood red lipstick

              Tue, August 23, 2005 - 8:44 AM
No, Ecco Bella isn't tinted; it's neutral and semi-matte. And it doesn't contain beeswax, so it's fine for vegans such as me. It's ingredients are zinc oxide, octyl methoxycinnimate, organic soybean oil, candelilla wax, castor oil, organic olive oil, vitamin E, rosemary, calendula extract, vanilla extract and vanilla flavor. Unlike many "natural" lip balms, it's a really firm stick (not sticky) and stays clean on the lips.

I posted it here because (a) it's a great foundation for lipstick (according to my wife who likewise swears by it), and (b) it's what I wear instead of lipstick. I'd look terrible in lipstick.

I forgot to say - I picked up my new favorite red lipstick at MAC (at Bloomingdales, ooh, la la!!)

Named "Ladybug," worn with "Brick" Lip Pencil (lip pencils are a pain, but seem to be necessary for me with deep colors like red)... very moist...

Not sure how vintage/accurate it is, tho' - I assume the accurate reds are more opaque/matte...

My friend works for Laura Mercier and gave me a GREAT red lipstick...it's called "sultry"...I wore it the other night, and normally I'm not keen on reds but this one is great! goes on easy, is semi-matte, and doesn't completely stain the crap out of your lips (which is a GOOD thing if you accidentally go outside the line). AND it's a classic red!

I also wear Laura Mercier's "sultry". it is gorgeous & works really well with my fair skin. I'd also recommend Chanel's Hydrabase Crème Lipstick in "Saturn". It was slightly more wearable than the classic reds which wore me & not the other way around.

Hey, now--I'm not affiliated in any way with Ecco Bella; I just like sharing the info. Wish I'd discovered the stuff long ago.

And it does have a little to do with the thread, as--according to my wife--it makes a great foundation for regular lipstick. Plus, I already posted some on-topic content in this here thread, so I have a 50-word credit. Unless and until the moderator spanks me, I think my second post is OK.

How do you guys keep the lipstick lasting while not drying out your lips? My lips are dry and flaky in about 30mins. Plus, the color changes. Could it be the lipstick that I'm using?(I love the color, Indian Rose by Kiehl's) I've never had a decent lasting lip color that doesn't dry me out. Suggestions anyone?
        Please help!

I use a very light layer of Burt's Bees lip balm under whatever lipliner and lipstick I'm using. Very very light. Like, I put it on and blot half of it off. It seems to keep the lipstick connected to my lips without drying me out. I'd love to hear what other people do also!

Some other classic Revlon colors to try are Love That Red, Certainly Red, Fire & Ice, and Cherries in the Snow. These are their Super Lustrous lipsticks (in the black tube), they're less than $10.00, and you can find them everywhere. These are colors that have been around since the 1950's, so they might be close to what you're looking for.
