I just bought a pair of this fascinating pearl earrings. They fit around the >edges< of your ear & are non-pierced. I'm totally obsessed with this type of earring:

I want MORE. I found a few pair on eBay but none that compare with the pearl dripping drama. I first became interested in this style of ear ornament when my Grandmama passed away & I inherited a lot of her costume jewelry. I have a heavily encrusted rhinestone dangle pair from her collection that just rock my socks off.

Perhaps it's stupid of me to share my obsession as I'm actively looking for these rare types. But I figure, maybe some of you could send out some leads! I just bought these for $10 on eBay:

Here's an old advert. for pair by Boucher:

and Kramer:

when I do online searches, I come across a revival of sorts for the ren-fair faerrie types that are interesting, but definitely not what I'm looking for. Vintage all the way!

besides "ear wrap" do any of you experts or jewelry enthusiasts have a name for these to help with my key word searches? Lemme know. I can't help myself- *must* have.

I've never seen this type before, but they're really interesting. I remember my mother telling me about how for a very long time, pierced ears were thought of as really unsophisticated, because they tended to be associated with old-country immigrants and not genteel society (!), and it wasn't until the late 60s that they came back into style and stayed (and of course eventually mutated into today's stretched lobes). So during the 40 or so years piercings were out of vogue, this must have been a solution for something that stayed in place better than a clip or screw. I wonder how well they worked- I'm surprised it didn't catch on better.

I have a pair of rhinestone "ear wrap" earrings that my Grandma gave me to wear to the prom. They are something else and a lot more elaborate than any in your pics...I will take a photo of them tonight and post them for you to see. The problem is, they are extremely difficult to put on! I tried wearing them recently with my prom dress to an 80's prom birthday party, and I could not get them on my ears. I think it was a case of brain fart or something, cause I used to put them on no problem. I recall though that they were difficult to keep on.....

Some have memory wire & you can sort of customize/adjust, but I've never worn my pair dancing (re:prom). No headbanging, Dina!

post photos when you get a chance. If they're anything elaborate like the Boucher advert. then I wanna see...

Ooooh, very pretty! And to comment on "pierced ears..." My mom graduated high school in 1958 and had pierced ears. Her stepmom pierced them for her in the kitchen! She said you could buy "real" pierced earrings, but they were always "fine jewelry" and expensive...I asked her about the idea that only "certain kinds of girls" had their ears pierced back then, and she shrugged, and said she hadn't heard that. She said she had always hated clip earrings and screws...She was from a small town in Iowa, and I would have figured that they would have been more uptight there, but I guess not...:)
