Hi there- I'm interested in getting some good recommendations for fashion books with color plates. Specifically trend overview per decade with emphasis on both European & American designers of note.
Any suggestions for really good references?

Re: Books
Sun, December 28, 2008 - 5:44 PMlots of glossy pictures in the "fashion in detail" books from the V and A, who have a spectacular couture collection.
i have a couple of them
this one is happily available again after years of being insanely expensive and hard to find:
"17th -18th Century Fashion in Detail" www.amazon.com/Fashion-De...uttmuraa-20
strongly recommend pre-ordering the "20th century Fashion in Detail" book, as once they sell out the prices goes way the hell up
www.amazon.com/Twentieth-...uttmuraa-20
and you can never go wrong with books by Taschen.
"Fashion" 2 volume large format version edited by the Kyoto Costume Institute
www.amazon.com/Fashion-Ta...uttmuraa-20
and ouch. the definitive work on the House of Worth, is out of print, and now up to $400+ as a used book. ouch!

Re: Books
Tue, December 30, 2008 - 8:44 AMYou know, these books are not as fancy, but for more modern fashion, I have Books called Everday Fashions of the Fifties and Forties...They have them from every decade going back to the twenties through the Eighties, I believe. They are actual pages from catalogues, and focus on what real people wore. They are available on Amazon.com and don't cost very much. They may not be as high end as what you want, but do represent in true detail what real people wore...:) -
