I am in LA, been sewing for 20 years but now at FIDM so I can have a CERTIFICATE saying I'm good enough...or something like that. I can teach you stuff, otherwise I'm sure there's a community school if you don't want to go to FIDM, Brooks or Otis...

I hear LA City College has good & inexpensive classes... & Sewing Arts in Santa Monica has some classes, too.. are there community ed. classes in LA? I haven't been here long, so I don't know...

It depends on what you're trying to learn. If you're beginner-beginner and want to work off of patterns most (I think all) JoAnn Fabrics stores offer lessons. Most community colleges do, as well, and probably have more advanced levels you can get to. If you're looking to learn something specific like "I want to make corsets" or "I want to know how to work without a pattern" it may be easier to have someone tutor you personally.

From my personal experience (and nothing against the person who is attending, I just hated it) I wouldn't go to FIDM. That's a lot of money for a certificate and non-transferable credits, for teachers to treat you like you don't know what a seam treatment is.
