Help! Acetate Fabric

I scored HUGE on ebay. I bought a vintage dress made for me. It's Acetate and has a few small holes in it that I need to address.

The dress is in great shape - you can't really see the holes - snags unless you hold the fabric up to the light - but was wondering if there is anything I can do to slow down these holes from getting worse. I read that heat is NO GOOD for this fabric (assumed that anyway.)

I am 100% going to make a pattern from this dress so that I can attempt to recreate it when I find suitable fabric.

I would guess I can get quite a few wears out of this dress - but I don't want to destroy it if there is a way for me to fix these little holes......

antique lace clothing restoration question Xpost

I'm not sure if this is the right tribe for this, but I have a question about vintage/antique clothing so I figured this would be a good tribe to ask. I was recently given a bag of really really cool old clothing that belonged to my grandmother and my great-grandmother including my great-grandmother's wedding dress, among other things. The only problem is that a few of the items are made out of lace that literally desintigrates when it is touched. Right now, all this beautiful clothing is just sitting in a bag in my room which is really depressing since I want to either wear it or display it somehow without ruining it. Does anyone have any suggestions for anything I could do myself, or a good place that could restore these clothes somehow?
Thanks in advance!

Chanel's first Red Lipstick

I was reading that Chanel's limited edition lipstick called Premier Rouge (First Red), was a replication of the color that Coco Chanel wore and introduced in 1924. Does anyone know what the color was named back in the day before it was reformulated?
On this board I had read that Chanel lipstick Red No. 5 (which existed from 2005 -2007) was the closest to the original red, but Red No. 5 is not a true red. It's a pinkish red; very similar to Coco Red. Anyway Premier Red is a reformulation of Chanel's classic red lipstick when there was only one red. It was the first red lipstick from Chanel, and that's why it's the latter day reformulation was called Premier Red...First Red. So, does anyone know what the original name was of Chanels first red lipstick? Maybe "red"???

1950s costume, true to life, not a parody

I've been invited to be a dance instructor at an elementary school dance to be held in the spring (May). I want to go in costume, but I don't want to be a parody of the 50s.....I want the true to life look of what a teenager would have been wearing. Any suggestions or ideas?
Thanks

Caravajal15 residenza dinamica
International Projects 2008

The workshop is limited to 16 participants.
maximum 16 participants
7-day workshop, plus one day pause

Logomotion Writing Workshop
Sometimes our words don't have access to what we know in our bones.
In this workshop we will be improvising moving and speaking, and we will be writing.
While our writing will stimulate our imagination and support our improvisations, our improvisations will enrich our writing with a kinesthetic timing to phrasing and windows on sudden thoughts and memories.
Our activities will include studio sessions of improvisational moving and speaking, spontaneous writing, walks in town, with partners, for conversations about matters large and small, and private times to write and to craft our writings and to read them to each other.
We will borrow from the writing practice of Natalie Goldberg as found in her books “Writing Down the Bones” and “Wild Mind”, discovering the associations that gather spontaneously around a chosen point of departure.
As our movement work will include many activities in partners and in groups, some of our writing will include more than one voice, focusing on the relationships between the thoughts of different people.
A goal will be to write with wild mind and intention, and with awareness of world.

Jennifer Dunning writes in her 1991 New York Times review: “Simone Forti presented her first dance program in 1960 and has since then had a steadily increasing influence on post-modernist choreographers interested in exploring ‘natural’ or non-formalist movement and dance”.

my cardigan is dying (and I can't dye it any more)

My absolute favorite 50s-esque fitted black jewel neck 3/4 sleeve cardigan is finally on its last fibers. I'm going to try re-dyeing it one more time, but I don't have much hope.

I need to replace it, but all my searches for cardigans are coming up loosely-fitted, or embellished. I got this one at Express, and it is silk and nylon, and is tight enough to wear either as a layer or by itself. I love the 3/4 sleeve, but full length would be fine, if it was tight.

Am I searching for the right thing... are the tight sweaters with the ribbing 4-5" around the bottom still called cardigans?

I know that there are a lot of people out there who don't like to always wear vintage (there are better things to spend time and money on than always being at the dry cleaners) so here's a tip: www.lipstickvogue.com 30's, 40's, & 50's reproductions, mostly cotton and mostly day wear stuff. There's also a section on hairstyles and a little thing on the history of the 40's fashion.

Wanted: Vintage Lingerie

Crafty vixens in Sacramento, CA are seeking vintage lingerie circa 1940-1960. We're looking for donated items, and will pay for shipping.

Even if your items are not good enough to sell on E-bay....don't despair. There's still a good home for them out there. We're looking for bras, girdles, corsets, corselettes, camis, and body shapers. (Sorry - garden variety underwear need not apply). Small rips, stains, or blemishes are not an issue to us, and we also aren't picky about sizes.

Please consider contacting me for details if you have suitable items.

Thank you!

Thick but soft fabric with grooved inlay pattern like Brocade. Does anyone know ?
I have searched every fabric site for a pic. Cannot find it. It has a raised pattern but it is the actual fabric.
This was my Mother's Wedding Dress/Suit. Would like to find one like it. Any help appreciated.
Very Jackie O - Incredibly classic.

I have to gush, I just can't help it! But the dress in the photo I just posted was only TWO DOLLARS AND FIFTY CENTS! I couldn't believe it! I saw it on the hangar and practically ran to the register in case someone realized the price mistake. I didn't even care if it fit me, I needed to rescue it...I tried it on when I got home, and it was like it was custom made for me...And there is not a thing wrong with it...No snags, pulls, zipper and french hooks in tact, and the velvet is soft as butter...

...Ah, warm fuzzies...

Hello, I'm new here, I love vintage & vintage style clothes too. Though at nearly 6' tall it's really difficult to find true vintage that fits me, so i SEW! And if you do too, Vogue patterns has their vintage patterns and Folkwear.com has some VERY nice 30s-40s vintage-style patterns as well. I have a really great dress from the 50s (or early 60s) that fits OK but was made for someone my SIZE but not my HEIGHT so I wear it anyway & the waistline is too high but do I care? It's a fabulous dress & I get compliments so I can dig it. Happy to be here!

Looking for designers for our June 9th fashion show at Root Division, 17th and south Van Ness, San Francisco. We are looking for more of an eccentric-Tim Burton-costumey-couture style, vintage is good too. As many pieces as you can make, but at least 2 or 3. Its going to be a 6 to midnight party with art, fashion show, circus acts and more. Shoot me an email if you are interested.

Hey, I'm brand new to tribe, and I'm wondering if anyone knows good stores (to be able to try on) or websites for 20's/30's women's clothes/styles? I'm in Portland, Or. I'm in a vintage jazz band, and need to look HOT! I'm sort of faking it with bits and peices of my own, or garb that fits in o.k., but...any suggestions?
Thanks,
Not *actual* vintage, but great period clothing, nonetheless. My piece is fairly well-made and was reasonably priced. If you make it down to LA often enough, you might even catch one of their sample sales.......!

I've got some pieces I'd love to part with and send to a good home and there is so much on ebay... I'm looking for a place to sell. Is it allowed on this tribe or is there a friendly tribe to join?

I am not too big a fan of modern Eddie Bauer stuff but then I found this really old interesting EB wool cape/button down poncho...
Wish i could figure out how to date it.
The tag has little pyramids at the top and the lable says Eddie Bauer
and underneath that
Expedition Outfitter . Seattle, usa
then there is a smaller white tag that reads C.C. Filson co. Seattle

Anyone know anything about dating vintage Eddie Bauer?
I know they have been around since 1920,,,

Selling vintage in L.A.

Anyone have suggestions on where to sell vintage clothing in Los Angeles? I have women's cowboy boots and clothing in larger sizes (14-16), mostly 40s, 50s and a little repro-vintage. Wasteland took some pieces, but their taste is very specific and they turned down a lot of stuff that surprised me. Can you think of other places I might try? (already know about Buffalo Exchange & Crossroads, but would bet they pay next to nothing)

What vintage fashion are you wearing this Christmas?

(or Hanukkah, of course)

I plan to wear a couple bright (red) plaid pendleton coats/jackets. Today, a Pendleton Traveller from "Andy Anderson's", Oklahoma City, with the big mother of pearl buttons and red/grey white, and tomorrow, with a rounded collar, red buttons, in red/green/white/thin yellow stripe...

Of course, last Christmas, when I wore the second jacket, I got mugged... wonder if I was too much of a target in glowing red plaid? Probably.

Fun story

Three days ago I walked down to my local Amvets. Once in a while it calls me, and I go to see if there are any jewels among the crap. Well, this time there were: a whole trove of obviously expensive and quite flamboyant clothing ranging from the mid-60s to the late-80s, clearly all from the same original owner -- the taste and size was so consistent. I purchased two silver dresses, one lame' (mid-60, empire waist, plunging neckline), and one metallic knit (bell sleeves with purple stripes at the end, probably mid-70s, Saks label, made in Italy). Both were under $10-. The next day I returned and purchased the late-60s-to-early-70s white jumpsuit with beading at the neckline, entirely covered in layers of fringe. This morning I removed the puffy sleeves on that one, gave it a light bleach bath, and it looks incredible!

These things were so eccentric, and displayed such a strong sense of style, that I was intensely curious about the original owner. Was she an entertainer? One really peculiar item I didn't buy was a white and gold lace jumpsuit with a high victorian collar and ostrich feather trim on the legs. As luck would have it, there was a dry cleaning tag on one of the things I did buy, with a fairly unusual name on it. A google search revealed that the original owner was a local socialite and philanthropist, not an entertainer, and that she was known for her fabulous clothes and patronage of music and education. She died last spring at the relatively young age of 67. It was so interesting to see these pieces of a life, to enjoy them myself, and to learn about the original owner.

Most of my wardrobe was destroyed in a fire and now I am being asked to provide "expert" appraisal of its value. I have photos of what remained and even kept the labels out of the damaged vintage clothing. Does anyone know anyone who can help me prove the value of my costume and vintage wardrobe? If you work at a vintage clothing store, that may be sufficient. I'm located in San Francisco. Thanks for any help you can send my way.

Come receive the gospel of divine aesthete-ery from its high priest on this, his only local appearance.

i recently acquired a fantastic bunny coat (it was left at a party we threw) and then discovered that the lining was stained with something sticky (likely some alcoholic beverage). i'm wondering how to clean it without harming the fur. anyone know if a dry cleaner can just clean the lining without charging a fortune? i know getting a whole fur coat dry cleaned is very expensive - plus the fur part is in good condition, it's just the lining that needs to be cleaned.

stains in vintage fabric?

I have this gorgeous handmade pale yellow dress, but it has these stains down the front. I would really like to wear it, but the dark stains are really noticable on the pale yellow. The fabric is some sort of polyester, and there is no tag or care instructions becaes it was home made. No clue what the stain might be, but I'm guessing maybe wine or some other drink. Is there something I can do at home to clean the stains? Should I take it to the cleaners? Vintage fabric specialist?

Lillie Rubin Salons Dress

Hey everyone! I just found a dress here in NC that is a "Lillie Rubin." I am not sure how old it is but it is black strapless (fifties ballerina length) with a persian lace inspired overlay of black net tulle with a metallic gold floral pattern. The back has slightly more gathering that is almost "bustle like."

I remember that on a lot of old game shows from the early seventies, when I was a kid, they would say so and so's wardrobe was "courtesy of Lillie Rubin Salons."

Does anybody else know anything about this label or have some pieces they could describe?
Aziza

Just a discussion question. Why do you prefer vintage clothes to new clothes? What is it about vintage that compels you? Do today's clothes have style or is it all just cheap schlock?

I was at the Buffalo Exchange in Berkeley on Telegraph Ave today, and stuffed on the purse rack was a nifty leopard print vintage muff! It was a little confusing because first I thought it was a crappy poorly designed purse, but then I realized that it was a muff with pockets inside. It was so exciting! I didn't buy it because I have no clue what I would do with a muff, so I didn't buy it. If you need a leopard print vintage muff get over to Buffalo Exchange ASAP!

Does anyone have a good website, or online store they could recommend? Hopefully one located in North America b/c shipping/handling from Europe is a b*$#h!

The stories coming out on the bell bottoms thread remind me of a book I read "What We Wore".. where the author interviewe people & they told about their favourite outfit.. the signifcance it had in their lives.. if they still had it.

Wish I hadn't loaned that book out.. I've not been able to track down another copy....

so....let's share some stories...

What was your favourite outfit?
How did it come to be part of your wardrobe?
What significance does it/did it have for you?
How did it make you feel?
Do you still have it?
Does it still fit?
Does it still reflect your style aesthetics today?

Pics posted with your story would be even more fun! :)

I am doing a photoshoot with a 1928 Ford Woody Wagon. I am looking for some CASUAL daywear for the shoot and have been unable to come up with anything. Anyone have any suggestions? I would rather err towards early 30's than have something thats pre-1928 as we want the photos to look accurate.

& since it was brought up by Petite F & recepted by others

Here It Is!
A tribe to sell barter or trade Your Stuff. This way what you may want to move on will have a focus tribe. Whatever is *good* or ^wanted^ or usable by someone cna be displayed.

Some dancers will be familiar to Tribal-Bay Marketplace so that's the idea/format. I am not set up for uploading pics at this time but I hope others will make the tribe an interesting interchange of *Stuff*

I love Whitaker auctions. They always have the most amazing stuff on a regular basis!!

I found the most adorable cats and kittens circle skirt I just had to share:

http://www.whitakerauction.com/Oct06_auction/Gallery3_10_06/pages/13b.htm

they have a ton of other vintage stuff (always!) and they add more as they're photographed. You can view the various galleries from their main page, http://www.whitakerauction.com

(and I am now obsessed and agog at this 1870's reception gown: http://www.whitakerauction.com/Oct06_auction/Gallery6_10_06/pages/8a.htm )

I am not out to make a profit, but to share with like minded people. Sometimes you find stuff that's great, but not the right size or color or whatever.
Do any of you guys have favorites in Seattle and the surrounding area? I would love to check some new places out.
Thanks!

amazing RISD website about Tirocchi Gowns dressmaker shop, 1915-1947

WOW! This website has everything! A lot of correspondence, photos, client measurements, and history about this shop. Here's the into blurb:

Curators from the RISD Museum were amazed and fascinated when they discovered the contents of the house at 514 Broadway in Providence, Rhode Island in 1989. Rooms shut forty-two years earlier were filled with some of the finest textiles and clothing from the first half of the century.

The house had served as the place of business for A. & L. Tirocchi Gowns from 1915 until 1947, and in addition to the garments and fabrics, still contained ledgers, photographs, correspondence, and other ephemera. This remarkable discovery provides a thorough and unique record of the evolution of clothing in the first half of the century, and of the lives of those who entered the house - the high society women who shopped there, the Italian immigrant women who worked there, and most of all, Anna and Laura Tirocchi, the sisters who ran the shop.

Long-term storage for men's suits

I may relocate overseas next year and I'm starting to think about what to do with the 50 vintage suits in my closet. They range in age from teens to the 60s. I'm mostly concerned with the 30s-40s men's suits. I hate to put them in storage as I'm worried I'll open up the boxes in a couple of years only to find them moth eaten. But I've been collecting these for so long I really don't want to get rid of them.

What recommendations are out there? I've always heard that it's best for wool to breath while at the same time to have some sort of bug repellent (moth balls, etc). But since they will be put away for at least a year I'm inclined to seal them off with lots of lethal moth balls to insure no damage.

I'll also be storing vintage shoes, shirts, hats and hundreds of vintage neck-ties so tips on the best way to store them would be helpful too.

Cheers!

On my way to the gym this morning, I noticed one of my neighbors having an *estate sale*. Man, oh man, was I LUCKY!!! She was obviously a very beautiful woman with a taste for the 40s....

I bought 7 pairs of vintage shoes (in case you couldn't tell from my profile that I have a total shoe fetish!!!).
3 bottles of vintage red nail polish
2 vintage slips, baby blue and baby pink with ruffles at the bottom
1 amazing and gorgeous silver satin night gown with robe from the 30s. It looks like something Jean Harlowe would have worn!!! The only bad thing is that it has bad rust stains at the bottom, which I will have to cut off. Luckily, I am short, so it will be okay.
1 comb with pearls - this is probably my favorite thing I bought
2 vintage cocktail aprons made from tulle. One is red, one is white. Both have sequined martini glasses on them. They are so cute!!

As soon as I can, I will take pics and put them on my profile!! I am so excited!!!
What's even better is that everything was only $37!!!!!

Vintage Hair Help

How can I get vintagy-looking hair without cutting it into a bob?

What I mean to say is, how do you get '20s, '30s, or 40's looking hair when it's waist length? I know not everybody had short hair, but sometimes it seems that way.

best source for vintage patterns?

So I can't find the clothes I want... 20's style stuff mostly. Where would I find vintage sewing patterns? I'd love to find a flapper dress with a handkercheif hem, and I'd rather not have to pull a pattern out of my ass.

Ebay Sale - Amaaaaazing 1950's pink sharkskin swing dress - ends 7/25

Hello vintage lovers... I'm a newbie here- just joined tribe today...

I'm currently parting w/ some of my wonderful vintage dress collection, and my absolute favorite is the last one left. If anyone is going to appreciate it and give it a loving home, it's the people here! This dress is one hell of a va-va-va-voom statement, even if it's still on the hanger! But due to my crack-like addiction to ebay and overflowing closet #4... I gotta start parting with some things no matter how painful... proceeds from this sale will go towards more Burning Man costumes :)

To view the dress - http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170009547405&rd=1&sspagename=STRK%3AMESE%3AIT&rd=1

This dress ends 7/25... even if you don't need it, go look... it's fabulous!
